Story 2: Mary
Story 2: Mary
Characters: Harry and Mary
“Do you remember anything about your past?”
“No”
“Do you know who these people around you are?”
“No”
“Do you remember your name?”
“No”
“Do you know who you are?”
No… All I can say is No. I really feel bad about this. I have amnesia, and it’s really hard having this thing. You don’t know who these people around you are. You don’t know why they’re crying. You don’t know why they need to call this guy in white coat that you’re already awake. You don’t know everything… Well I should say I’m kind of lucky because I can still remember some words and can open my mouth and talk.
“Harry! Oh my God! You don’t know how happy I am to see you!”
How am I going to know? I don’t even know you.
“Who are you?” I ask the girl
“I am your girlfriend, Harry! I’m---I’m Mary!”
“Mary?”
“Yes, Mary…” And she holds my hand… “I love you Harry”
I---I… I what? I know the word. I always say that word to my loved one. But, how come I can’t say that word? I may have amnesia but I can still talk and say some words that pop out of my mind! But how---
“Ma’am, do you want to cancel your appointments tomorrow?”
Another girl entered the room. But this girl is different. She’s simpler than Mary.
“Oh, yeah, cancel them all, I will be here with Harry tomorrow. I will guard him.”
“Okay…”
“By the way, what’s your name?” I asked the lady
“Oh, she’s my secretary, Chloe.” Mary answered—
“(Nodding) Chloe… It’s a nice name, but I think it’s not right for you.”
“What do you mean?” Chloe asks me timidly
“Because Chloe is a name for glamorous girls, and you’re not.” Mary answered, again. But I defend Chloe---
“No, but because she is a simple, sweet-looking woman, actually, the name Mary fits her.”
She smiles, so do I. And she leaves the room with a smile. But I can see it that her smile will disappear the moment my eyes can see her. Well, my smile gone too…
“What was it?”
“Huh?”
“You just embarrassed me, Harry!”
“What? But how? I just told you that she’s a simple and sweet-looking woman”
“But I am your girlfriend! You should tell me that!”
I sigh. I realize that, there is something wrong here~~~after few days, I’m home. Home, I try to remember things that happened to me. Maybe my memory will come back… I close my eyes and I remember something; I’m playing using a high-tech game console, and I beat someone who is playing with me. A girl, a very wonderful girl, and then I called her “Mary.” It’s Mary. She pouts jokingly, sweetly, and lovely. But---
“Harry! I’m so glad you’re back!” An old woman hugs me. I feel like this woman is really close to me. “Do you remember me? I’m your Aunt Amy!”
Aunt Amy… wait, I think I---Yes! I remembered her! Aunt Amy, the woman who stood up as my mother since then.
“Harry, glad you’re already home. Are you with Mary?”
Another old woman, but this time, the woman is more elegant. And she hugs me too.
“Who are you?”
“I’m your mother, Harry. I’m glad you’re back. By the way, where’s Mary?”
“I don’t know. She goes immediately when we arrived here.”
“Really? Oh, maybe, we should go to their home this evening to have a dinner with her family.”
I just said “Yes” to her (Sighs) Then evening, we went to Mary’s. Her house---Or should I say, mansion, are so big. Bigger than ours by, hmm, I don’t know, maybe 10-20 meters square.
“Danny!” The third old woman who hugged today, “How are you?”
“I’m fine...” And I smiles, a fake smile... “By the way, can I ask who are—“
“I’m---I’m Mary’s mother.”
“Oh...” Well, my mother and Mary’s mother have a chit chat and I explore Mary’s house. It’s really big. I am really amazed of the hugeness of the house, like I never been here before... Wait, am I sure that I’ve been in this house before? Well, I guess Mary’s the one who can answer my question. By the way, where is she? I look around and accidentally hear a very passionate tune coming from a room. I follow where the tune is coming. And I saw a piano. I can’t really see who is playing but I feel that the person playing the piano is important to me. I close my eyes and see a woman, again. I told her “Mary, you play wonderfully!” Wait, maybe Mary’s the one who’s playing. I open my eyes to check out if Mary’s really playing, but—
“Oh, it’s you” It’s not Mary, its Chloe, “You’re playing Piano?”
“Yeah, um, please, forget that you see me playing piano?”
“But why? You play wonderfully!” I smile---Did I told her that she plays wonderfully? Chloe’s eyes widen when she heard what I told her... I mean... I---
“You told me that---“
“Can I ask you something?”
“No, no, no you can’t” And she plans to run away but I grab her arm
“Chloe, um, can you please tell me the truth?”
“What do you mean?”
“You’re not Chloe, do you?” Her eyes slightly close, “Hey, you’re not Chloe right?” My hand becomes hard that it hurts her arm...
“HEY! IT HURTS!” And she took my hand off her arm forcefully that I ‘almost’ hit a wall and break a lamp...
Wait, this scene, I feel like this scene already happened to me... A girl and I were in the sidewalk and we have this quarrel while crossing the road...
”Why you need to go far away?”
“You don’t need to know”
“But why?” I grabbed her arm
“Just go!” And she took off my hand forcefully that I... that I... that I was hit by a moving car and---
“You... You’re not really Chloe” I told her and she suddenly sobs.
“It’s my fault. Because of me, you accidentally have amnesia. Because of---“
“You’re not Chloe. Because... because... because you’re Mary, right?”
“I—I’m sorry Harry...”
“Why you need to hide your identity to me?” She didn’t answer. I repeat my question... and---
“Because your mother said so... right from the start of our relationship, she never likes me because I’m not as rich as you. She wants you to marry Chloe because her family owns a very big company...”
“That’s why you and Chloe exchanged names?”
“Yeah, so please forget that we have this conversation, forget that we have a relationship, forget that---“
I hug her...
“My mind may forget a lot of things, but my heart didn’t. I love you Mary. And I can’t lose you.”
“How about your mother---“
“Let’s go home. You’ll meet someone who I really treat as my mother.”
“Aunt Amy?”
“You know her?”
“Of course, but this thing is still not right---“
“No, it is, because it’s the truth, the truth that we really love each other.”
Oh, we’re still hugging. And Mary—I mean Chloe entered and pushed Mary away from me.
“What do you think you’re doing to my boyfriend? Hey Harry, you alright?”
“Stop it, Chloe, I already knew the truth...”
“What truth? Wait—you call me Chloe?”
“Yes, because it’s your name.”
Chloe looks so shock. I assist Mary and we leave the room holding hands. Mother saw me with her and told me that she’s not my girlfriend.
“Well, yeah, you’re right, CHLOE is not my girlfriend. Mary is.”
Mother is also shocked, so the family of Chloe. And I and Mary leave the mansion smiling~~~When I’m home...
“Harry! Mary! You—“
“He already know the truth” Mary told Aunt Amy
“Really? So what are your plans now?” Aunt Amy asked us
“Do you want to have a vacation with us in other country, Auntie?” I asked her
“You two are not going to bring me alone, right?”
“We will bring all workers and maids working in this house”
I smile...
